WINCHESTER — The Winchester School Committee delayed a final vote on the fiscal 2027 school budget while outlining $2.3 million in proposed staffing cuts tied to a failed override. Superintendent Hackett said the district must trim $3.2 million from its rollover budget to hit a 5 percent target, including ten central office positions, 2.5 math specialist roles and six elementary classroom sections. Vinson-Owen Elementary will drop from three to two kindergarten and first-grade sections next year, with new registrants waitlisted.
Member Mignarji warned the cuts "will continue to grow inequities in our community," while member Hopcroft said the debate is "really back to this notion of impact." The committee also voted 5-0 to accept a memo asserting authority over the Carriage House and deferred a $722,305 literacy curriculum funding request to Thursday's meeting.
