WINCHESTER — The Winchester School Committee voted 5-0 to adopt more than 20 revised policies but declined to set deadlines for new screen-time rules. Six residents, including attorney Alexis Darcy and parents Katie O'Connor and Rachel Chidsey, pressed the committee during public comment to commit to transparency on tech usage data, grade-level screen-time guidelines, and a K-8 generative AI moratorium, with one speaker calling district Chromebook mandates "crazy." Chair Matthews rejected an October 2026 deadline, saying it would substitute "a deadline from outside of our process" for deliberation. The district's Technology Usage Committee reported preliminary survey data showing most kindergarten classrooms use technology "30 minutes a week or less," with grades 2-5 near "one hour or less." Winchester High School Principal Konis said the school's roughly 1,347 students will keep this year's cell-phone-in-holder policy during instructional blocks, with a stricter bell-to-bell draft ready if state legislators act.
