Tree Committee Approves February Minutes, Plans Special Vote on Grant Letter

Winchester's tree panel endorsed a $100K-plus grant for municipal inventory and management. Chair Austin Whitman reported that a March 21 override vote could secure $50,000 in FY27 and $100,000 each in FY28 and FY29 for trees, with funding flowing through the Department of Public Works under collaborative allocation with the committee and Select Board. Sophomore Sophia Liu pitched a Girl Scout Gold Award project using a smartphone app called ArborHealthTracker to screen 500-plus public trees and train ten high school students in tree health assessment.
The committee voted unanimously to schedule a special March 17 meeting at 7 p.m. to vote on a letter supporting a Mystic River Watershed Association Municipal Vulnerability Preparedness grant application with a March 21 deadline.
