Housing Partnership Board updates on three major projects

Winchester Housing Partnership Board reviews three major development proposals. Chair John Suhrbier announced Select Board member Michael Bettencourt was selected as one of 30 participants in CHAPA's Housing Leadership Academy. The board discussed the Melanson mixed-use development at Washington and Swanton Street, a Chapter 40B project with 64 units, 16 of which would be affordable; the hearing continues in February on stormwater and traffic.
Laura Glynn reported the Winchester Housing Authority operates 112 apartments for elderly and disabled residents and seven family homes. The board spent substantial time debating Urban Spaces' proposal for 33 Mt. Vernon Street, which would reduce affordable units from six to two to lower building height from six to five stories; members rejected a two-thirds reduction in affordable housing and indicated willingness only to accept a small reduction if paired with other design changes.
